Growing both personally and professionally is a journey that involves picking up new skills and continually improving. None of us were born knowing everything and I don’t recall seeing any “Best Life” User Manuals in print.
Here are five skills you might consider focusing on, along with actionable ideas to develop each:
1. Emotional Intelligence
Understanding and managing your emotions is your responsibility. Reading a room and understanding the emotions of others can help you communicate more effectively and build stronger relationships. My life changed once I realized that no one else was responsible for my happiness, sadness, or success.
Action Steps:
- Keep a journal to track your emotional triggers and reactions.
- Consider reading a book like "Emotional Intelligence 2.0" to deepen your emotional IQ.
2. Time Management
Effective time management can help you achieve more in less time and reduce stress. Remember, being 45 minutes late is not fashionable… it’s just late and inconsiderate of other people’s time.
Action Steps:
- Use a planner or digital calendar to schedule your day or week.
- Give yourself permission to say “No” to something this week.
3. Networking Skills
Your network can open doors to new opportunities, provide perspective, and support you in your career journey. My network has helped me land jobs, find a dream house and grow my investment portfolio. Learn to speak to strangers. Learn to listen more than you talk.
Action Steps:
- Make it a point to attend at least one career related event a month and one fun personal event a month. Aim to connect with people who can offer different perspectives or opportunities. Follow up with them, even if it's just a friendly "nice to meet you" email or text.
4. Personal Branding
Your personal brand sets you apart and helps potential friends, dates, clients, and employers understand if you might be a good match. Your personal brand can be anything you want it to be. You get to decide. I’ve learned the most important things is to be consistent in your branding.
Action Steps:
- Create a portfolio or personal website to showcase your skills and achievements.
- Be consistent with your messaging and appearance on social media.
5. Curiosity
Being curious naturally leads you to want to learn and grow. The desire to "know more" keeps you updated and makes you more knowledgeable, versatile, and adaptable to change. Being curious about how other cultures live has led to my many travels. Curiosity about new technologies has led to a whole new career path for me. Stay Curious!
Action Steps:
- Pick a subject and list out what you want to learn about it.
- Dedicate at least an hour per week to research and exploration of the subject.
Working on these skills will not only grow you and make you more effective but also more attuned to the nuances of your relationships and opportunities. Happy skill-building! 😊 Wishing you nothing but success!
